Why Doesn’t Steel Rust?
Why Doesn’t Steel Rust?

Steel frame houses are becoming extremely popular in Australia as home owners and builders discover the many benefits of building with steel.

If you’ve ever been to Far North Queensland, you will know that the classic ‘Queenslander’ homes have great big verandahs and so-called ‘tin roofs’. In the past the other main construction material used in these types of houses was timber. These days many Queenslander homes are being built using steel frame systems. They might still look like a classic ‘timber and tin house’ from the outside, but their steel frames mean they can better withstand the extreme weather conditions which are commonly experienced in Far North Queensland.

One of the key questions that customers ask us about steel framed homes is whether or not the frames will rust.

Will steel rust or corrode?

Galvanised steel is made with an inbuilt resistance to both rust and rot of any kind. It also won’t corrode or deteriorate in any way.

Dynamic Steel Frame’s LGS frames are made of steel which is protected with a coating of zinc-aluminium-magnesium alloy. This coating is made to the highest of Australian standards and codes for the building industry. This is one of the reasons why our steel frames are such a good choice for longevity and low maintenance.

Steel frames in the weather

If you consider the ‘tin roof’ example from Far North Queensland, these homes are exposed to the elements all the time and need to be highly strong and durable if they are going to stand up to harsh weather conditions. Steel holds up better in the weather than any other construction material.

While steel is an extremely lightweight material, it is also very strong and won’t bend or warp in the harsh Australian conditions. In fact, the reason galvanised steel is used so much in tropical regions of Australia is because they are safest in cyclone conditions. Whether you live in a part of Australia which experiences average or extreme weather conditions, your investment in a steel frame home will be one you’ll never regret.

Unbelievable durability

Our steel frame systems have excellent durability. Where there are cut edges, the galvanic action or sacrificial protection of the coatings protects the exposed steel edge against rust and corrosion.

We exclusively use Bluescope Truecore® steel which carries a 50-year warranty against corrosion (conditions apply). This is the highest level of warranty available.
